For any serious fan of The Simpsons, the book is not recommended--it is mandatory. The book includes information on every episode prior to its publication. The book contains all the boring stuff (date of airing, episode number, e.g.), but the true value of the book is in the many features for each story and the exhaustive indeces. Here you'll find Barts many blackboard writings ("I will not belch the national anthem," e.g.), a list of the episodes in which Homer says "D'oh," Patty's brand of cigarettes (Lady Laramie 100's), and so much more. My two favorite features are "Stuff you may have missed," which lists a variety of subtle elements (such as Bart spelling "eat my shorts" in the answer spaces of a history test), and an exhaustive list of all the voices behind the characters. Quite simply, any fan of the show must own this book.
As a die-hard Simpson's fan, I immediately bought this book the instant that I saw it and was not disappointed. Contained within this volume (and it's companion expansion [buy both!]) is a trove of Simpson's trivia that will keep you busy. I love to quote this show immensely and engage my friends in trivia contests quite often, and this book really revved up my knowledge. A few minor things, however, keep this book from a 5-Star rating. Though many of the songs are included, several were overlooked and not put in (they are, however, present in the companion volume). Also, many of the quotes published for each episode, while often funny, are usually not of the best included in the show. However, this book is certainly a must-have for the Simpsons fan in your life. Enjoy!
This is the definitive work on the Simpsons (years 1990 through 1997). Each show is summarized and many choice pieces of dialogue are included for your repeated enjoyment. It even includes brief summaries of when the show was just a short feature on the Tracey Ullman Show.Where I come from the Simpsons is shown 4 times a day. This sort of exposure can only enhance the Simpsons' reputation as the cleverest and wittiest show on the tube (as well as make Matt Groening the envy of avarice). The jokes are sharp, the social and political parodies are astute, and Homer J. Simpson is the king of the Everyman (or at least of every fat, bald, lazy, beer-guzzling, sister-in-law hating man). As Homer would say, "exactly...doh!".
This is the perfect book for any Simpsons fanatic. This book has a detailed synopsis of every episode and features many things that you might not have noticed in an episode. This book also features a charactor bio, a list of what happens in the beginning sequence on the couch, and of course a list of everytime Homer says DOH!. This book has all that I mentioned plus much, much more. If you're a big Simpsons fan don't miss out on the quality piece of merchandise.
This is one of the most extraordinary volumes I've ever encountered encapsulating a television series (Entertainment Weekly's guide to "Seinfeld", it is not). Exhaustive, informative, and ridiculously entertaining, it is the perfect accompaniment to the perfect television show - as it is written by the people who write the show (which does make a difference). Even if you only "enjoy" the Simpsons (as opposed to being a raving fanatic, which most people who watch the show are, after all), you'll be able to come away with a heightened respect for the complexity of the show and the little things that make the show great (which may have flown by the first time)...the hours of entertainment this book brings make it a most worthwhile acquisition. Very highly recommended!
If you're a die-hard fan like me and want to know every little hidden secret in each episode, then this book is for you. I wouldn't recommend it for the person that catches an episode of Simpsons whenever they can. This book is so full of trivia tid-bits that you can rest assured that many Simpson newsgroups popped up after the release of this book. Each episode has one or two pages dedicated to it and on these pages you will find, the episode's technical details, a synopsis of the episode, memorable quotes from memorable characters, chunks of "must-memorise" dialogue, film/literary/historical references, and "What You Might Have Missed" - a section of little hidden jokes. Apart from the episode guide there is a list of Homer's "Mmmms", a list of Homer's "Doh's", all the couch gags, all of Bart's blackboard writings, a list of the cast and what voices they do, a list of the signs seen in Springfield, a list of Krusty merchandise, an episode guide for the 42 Simpson shorts seen on the Tracey Ullman show, and an episode guide for The Itchy and Scratch Show. This is NOT one of those 15 page black and white books printed on recycled newspaper with illegible writing and blurry images. This is a high-quality publication from Matt Groening himself.
Fans of the show will adore this book, a fabulously detailed and illustrated companion to the animated sitcom. I love "The Simpsons" for its wry humor and sly takes on life- politics, family, pop culture, etc. This book has it all- plot summaries, the best lines, character snipits, inspiration for certain episodes.Two thumbs way up.
